Take the initiative, GET SCORED!
Who needs one?
A Coronary CT Calcium Score is a powerful screening tool to evaluate heart health. We use low-dose CT imaging and advanced software to assess the degree of calcified atherosclerosis (calcified plaque) in the coronary arteries as a risk assessment tool for coronary artery disease. This screening tool is available to anyone but is most useful for individuals who are over the age of 55 or who have a personal or family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
What is the exam like?
Coronary CT Calcium Score imaging is performed utilizing low-dose CT imaging with dedicated software that calculates the amount of calcification in the coronary arteries. You will lie down on the CT table, and a three-lead EKG will be used to sync the CT with your heart rhythm. The actual exam takes about 7 minutes. After the study, a score is calculated for each of the coronary arteries based on the calcium deposits that are produced by hardening of the vessels. There is a strong association between coronary calcium scores and predicted risk of heart disease. Coronary artery screening represents one of the many ways we are making preventive exams easy, efficient, and accessible to help our patients achieve and maintain optimal health.
Does insurance cover a calcium score?
Some insurance companies such as Medicare and CareFirst cover this exam. If you have any questions, we encourage you to contact your health insurance provider prior to scheduling.
Because we believe in the importance of preventative medicine, if your insurance does not cover the exam, we offer Coronary CT Calcium Scores for a reduced “out of pocket” fee of $70.
