While some ultrasound exams don’t require preparation, others do. Some may require that you have a full bladder upon examination while others don’t allow you to eat or drink up to 12 hours before.

The following describe what is required for each type:

Abdominal Ultrasounds

Please have nothing to eat or drink (NPO) for 6 hours prior to your exam.

AORTA/IVC/Renal Artery

Please have nothing to eat or drink (NPO) for 6 hours prior to your exam.

Renal Ultrasound (Kidneys, Bladder)

Please drink 32 oz of water one hour prior to the exam. We also request that you do not urinate before the exam.

Pelvic Ultrasound

Please drink 32 oz of water one hour prior to the exam. We also request that you do not urinate before the exam.

OB Ultrasound (Pregnancy)
For women pregnant up to 25 weeks or less, please drink 16 oz of water 1 hours prior to your test.  We also request that you do not urinate before the exam.
